UFC Fight Night: Naurdiev v Park

Jun Yong Park scraped out another win in a truly strange fight at UFC Baku.

“The Iron Turtle” was on the receiving end of a brutal illegal knee in the second round of his fight with Ismail Naurdiev, a foul that occurred after Naurdiev had already twice poked Park in the eye. Referee Lukasz Bosacki stepped in to pause the bout with Naurdiev thinking that fight had been waved off in his favor.

After a long break in the action, which included Bosacki consulting referee Herb Dean at cageside, the decision was made to ding Naurdiev with a two-point penalty rather than disqualify Naurdiev or declare a no-contest. Adding to the chaos, it was unclear if Park was even able to see out of his left eye after being hit by the knee, but the middleweight veteran was allowed to continue.

Park went on to dominate the remainder of the contest, winning a unanimous decision via a rare combination of scores, 29-26, 29-26, and 29-25.

Fighters were just as baffled as fans at what transpired in Round 2 and you can check out reactions from social media below.
