Jack Della Maddalena and Belal Muhammad gave fans an incredible battle in the UFC 315 main event, and regardless of who won, both men received plenty of praise from their peers.
The general consensus to Saturday’s championship headliner appeared to be “What a fight,” an appropriate response given how Della Maddalena and Muhammad battered each other for five rounds. In the end, it was Della Maddalena who won what was primarily a striking battle as he earned a unanimous decision nod to defeat Muhammad and become the new UFC welterweight champion.
It’s been an incredible turn of events for Della Maddalena, who was pulled from a fight with Leon Edwards this past March to instead challenge Muhammad due to No. 1 contender Shavkat Rakhmonov being unavailable due to injury. Much of the talk heading into Saturday was not even about how Della Maddalena and Muhammad matched up, but rather if Muhammad winning would result in his close friend Islam Makhachev putting aside a welterweight move to fight Ilia Topuria at UFC 317, or if a loss would open the door for Makhachev to change divisions and fight Della Maddalena.
Now, it seems Makhachev plans to follow up on the potential plans, as he tweeted, “Time to become a double champion. Let’s go.”
