UFC 309: Jones v Miocic

Jon Jones may or may not be fighting soon. One thing fans can be sure of is that his confidence is as high as ever.

The UFC heavyweight champion has been leaving a trail of bread crumbs on social media as he travels the world, most recently writing that whatever his plans may be concerning his career, the UFC should already know what to expect. Jones, 37, has not fought since successfully defending his title against Stipe Miocic this past November and has competed just twice since 2020.

The biggest question the future UFC Hall of Famer faces now is whether he will ever fight Tom Aspinall, the UFC’s interim heavyweight champion. Aspinall, 32, has repeatedly called for a unification bout with Jones, with Jones rarely reciprocating that interest.

In his latest social media snipe, “Bones” took to Instagram Stories to share a clip of a dog calmly wrestling another, much louder dog to the ground. He added the caption, “What I feel like returning to the UFC after some much-needed downtime.”

The clip and comment are a not-so-subtle jab at Aspinall, who Jones has repeatedly accused of not having the credentials to fight him. Aspinall is 8-1 in the UFC and he avenged his lone loss to Curtis Blaydes with a dominant win at UFC 304. That was also Aspinall’s first defense of his interim title and he now has as many successful heavyweight title defenses as Jones.

Prior to moving up to heavyweight, Jones reigned over the light heavyweight division for over a decade, establishing himself as one of the greatest fighters of all time. He claimed a vacant heavyweight belt—made so by a departing Francis Ngannou—at UFC 285 with a dominant submission victory against Ciryl Gane.

Aspinall said on a recent podcast that he’d “had enough” of chasing the Jones fight and is ready to move on to a different matchup.
