Usman vs. Buckley took place June 14 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Kamaru Usman (21-4) and Joaquin Buckley (20-7) squared off in the main event clash. The fight aired live on on ESPN and ESPN+.

Round 1

No glove touch. All business.

We’re off. Very tense in the opening moments. Both guys throwing shots, nothing landing, and Usman gets a super easy takedown. I mean, very little effort and Buckley could be in for a long four minutes.

Usman heavy on top, landing the occasional punch, but just weighing down on him. Right hand from Usman, and more pressure. Rinse and repeat.

Crowd not loving this strategy from Usman, but it’s working beautifully. Buckley is busted open on his right eye as this round is all Usman. Big shots from Usman at the horn. Not quite a 10-8, but pretty damn close.

Round 2

Buckley needs to make something happen quick to get some momentum back, because he got smooshed in that round. Good left from Buckley to start the second.

Usman feinted a takedown, and Buckley bit hard. Buckley with a jumping knee that comes up short, comes in for a combination, not much there. Usman shoots from, what seemed like, a mile away and, again, EASILY gets Buckley down. Crowd booing quite loudly, but Usman undeterred as he remains on top making Buckley’s life miserable.

Usman still on top. Buckley no answers whatsoever. Final 15 seconds, Usman gets full mount, lands a few punches. Usman confidently tried to stand over Buckley a the horn, Buckley turtles up and Usman falls over. All Usman through 10 minues.

Round 3

This has not been remotely competitive to this point, folks.

Buckley charging in with punches, grazes Usman. When Buckley is busy and throwing, he’s doing OK, but when he slows down for a moment, Usman pounces. So far, through 90 seconds, Buckley is upright. Buckley lands a nice uppercut that appeared to sting Usman a touch. The former champ resets and throws a body kick. Buckley ducks under a lazy left hook from Usman and lands a beautiful left hand. Usman immediately grabs a single, and Buckley is easily taken down yet again. Crowd not happy.

Usman putting the pressure back on. Buckley trying to smile it off, but he’s about to be down three rounds it appears. The man needs to defend a takedown or he’s toast, as Usman lands some mounted elbows to end the round.

Round 4

Usman a -720 in the live odds right now.

Dominick Cruz keeps saying Buckley is not out of this fight, but each minute that goes by, that becomes less true. Buckley staying way outside, lands a nice combination as he gets close. In tight, they exchange, Buckley slightly gets the better of it.

Good uppercut from Buckley, Usman answers with a right hand. Buckley switches stances, lands a left, a knee to the body, and another left. Now Buckley back to southpaw. Good jab from Usman.

Usman charges in with a double, Buckley talking trash while defending, Usman takes a deep breath and dumps him. I’m truly stunned by how bad Buckley’s takedown defense has been. Not that Usman isn’t a great wrestler, but it’s like Buckley didn’t fully prepare for this, which is stunning to watch.

Final 30 seconds, Buckley unlikely to get back to his feet. If you’re a Buckley bettor right now, you can’t be happy.

Round 5

Buckley needs to go full berzerker now.

He tried to start, but now he’s just stance switching and not doing much offensively. Usman goes for a single, then tries a double, and Buckley defends, and defends another one.

Usman jabs Buckley’s head right back. Usman shoots a somewhat lazy single, and almost gets the takedown, Buckley defends. Usman shoots again, Buckley defends and makes him pay with a good shot. Tide is switching but it may be too late. Buckley with a nice combination. Usman pushes Buckley against the fence, which is very smart.

Crowd booing loudly again, and Buckley gets separation. Big left from Buckley, and another. Buckley has one minute for a knockout.

Counter left from Buckley, just missed with an uppercut. 30 seconds left, big combination from Buckley. Usman retreating. Buckley lands a big left at the horn. Buckley wins the fifth, but loses the fight.
