Katie Taylor has still never lost to Amanda Serrano.
On Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Taylor put her undisputed super lightweight championship on the line against Serrano for the third time, and for the third time, the Irish champion walked away with the win, taking a majority decision over Serrano after 10 competitive rounds.
The first two fights between Taylor and Serrano were a whirlwind of punches, pitting Serranoâs forward pressure with Taylorâs counters. The raucous Madison Square Garden crowd clearly expected more of the same for this third encounter, as the atmosphere in the arena was off the charts. But that atmosphere didnât lead to another barnburner of a matchup, as instead, fans got something much slower paced and contested primarily at distance. Serrano still had moments of forward pressure, but was much more content to exchange blows at range, where Taylor seemed to consistently find the cleaner strikes.
Even still, the fight was razor close, with one judge scoring the bout a draw and the other two judges scoring it 97-93 for Taylor.
After the bout, Serrano said she âtried something differentâ considering her approach in the first two bouts did not lead to a win. Serrano may be kicking herself now as this was perhaps the least controversial of Taylorâs wins in all three fights.
Taylor, for her part, gave huge credit to Serrano after the bout for all theyâve accomplished together, but insisted this is the last time sheâll meet Serrano in the ring.
âI just donât want to fight Amanda Serrano again. She punches too hard.â
