Diego Sanchez has been released from jail after he was arrested on a pair of gun-related charges and held there since this past Friday.
On Tuesday, Judge Cindy Leos opted to release Sanchez from custody after he was detained without bond following his initial arrest. Sanchez was being held after a judge ruled this past Friday during his initial arraignment that he should remain in custody on a no-bond hold for preventative measures.
During her ruling, Leos noted Sanchez’s lack of criminal history as a reason for his release pending trial.
Sanchez faces a pair of criminal charges including a felony for allegedly firing a gun out of a car window while passing a car crash site this past Thursday night. Police followed the vehicle where Sanchez was a passenger and eventually pulled the car over where the fighter denied firing the weapon but admitted there was a gun in the car.
Sanchez’s friend, who was driving the vehicle, told police that it was the Ultimate Fighter winner who fired the gun.
“He rolls down the window and is like, ‘I love you, I love you! I love you 505!’ and pulls off some rounds,” Sanchez’s friend told police.
The driver of the vehicle was not charged.
Sanchez was hit with two separate charges — one for Shooting at or from a motor vehicle (no great bodily harm), which is a fourth-degree felony, and Negligent use of a deadly weapon (discharge), a misdemeanor.
Following his arrest, Sanchez’s representative Ricky Kottenstette told MMA Fighting that the UFC veteran has been struggling with substance abuse in recent years with multiple stints in rehab. There’s hope that this latest incident could lead him back to another treatment facility.
At least now, Sanchez heads home after the judge released him from custody pending a potential trial for the gun-related charges he faces.
