Andrew Tackett claimed the UFC BJJ welterweight title in June and was back in action Thursday night to defend his throne in the main event of UFC BJJ 2 in Las Vegas. And once again he left still as champion, this time after an exciting match with Renato Canuto at the UFC APEX.
Canuto shot for a double leg as soon as the match began, but Tackett got back to his feet right away. Canuto threatened with a kimura after an insane scramble, but Tackett had good defense. Tackett fired back with kimura and arm-triangle choke attempts and Canuto defended, but ended up giving Tackett a chance to lock in a d’arce choke and force Canuto to give up.

Andrew’s brother William Tackett entered the mat for the third-to-last match of the evening opposite Kyle Chambers and it didn’t last long. Tackett passed the guard and attacked with an arm-triangle choke, forcing Chambers to give up his back and tap to a rear-naked choke.

The inaugural UFC BJJ light heavyweight title was on the line in the co-main event with UFC Fight Pass Invitational veteran Mason Fowler taking on two-time Quintet winner David Garmo, and it didn’t last long.
A black belt under Caio Terra, Fowler secured an ankle pick takedown a minute into the match and quickly transitioned to the back. Fowler had both hooks in with more than three minutes left on the clock, but only needed a few more seconds to lock in the rear-naked choke and force the tap.

Renato’s wife Raquel Canuto, a three-time IBJJF no-gi world champion, competed down the card facing off with Morgan Black. They battled on the feet for a takedown and Black immediately countered to end on top, but Canuto had the kneebar deep, leaving her no choice but to tap out.
Mikey Musumeci, who defends his bantamweight title against a yet-to-be-announced opponent Oct. 2 at UFC BJJ 3, had good reasons to celebrate Thursday night. First, his protege Jalen Fonacier made short work of Everton Teixeira with an inside heel hook finish. Mikey’s sister Tammi Musumeci competed next, winning a decision over Leilani Bernales.

Musumeci was back in the corner with legendary jiu-jitsu champion Rubens Charles “Cobrinha”, who coached his son Kennedy Maciel against fellow Brazilian lightweight Ademir Barreto.
Barreto had a good heel hook attempt in round one but Maciel successfully defended it. The high-paced action in the opening round led to a slower rhythm in round two, with Maciel staying on top control most of the time. “Cobrinha Jr.” went for a kneebar midway through the final round and a rear-naked choke late in the round. Even though Barreto successfully defended both attacks, it was enough for Maciel to secure the decision victory after time ran out.
