Kai’Sa is a tragic character from League of Legends whose humble origins transformed into something more, turning her into a champion. Kai’Sa’s story in LoL shows how she became the Void Champion that players know, and it is a story full of tragedy and survival.

We’re going to be diving deeper into Kai’Sa’s lore to examine who she is and how she became a LoL champion. We’re also going to look more closely at Kai’Sa’s character in League of Legends to see what abilities she has and what kind of champion she is.

Who is Kai’Sa in League of Legends?

Kai’Sa is a Void Champion in League of Legends. Void Champions are a faction that harnesses the dark and corrupting power of the primordial Void force. Their powers are directly connected to the Void, making them a somewhat sinister and feared group.

Kai’Sa is known as the Daughter of the Void. She is considered somewhat different to her fellow Void Champions as she retains a good portion of her humanity. However, she is still feared by those around her.

When it comes to Kai’Sa’s abilities, she is a mage/marksman champion. She blends excellent mobility with standard marksman-like abilities. She works well as a ranged character, but has plenty of potential thanks to her versatility and build options.

So, what is the story of Kai’Sa in LoL? Surprisingly, her early life is pretty humble and unremarkable. In Kai’Sa’s biography, she is said to have been a regular girl named Kaisa who came from a normal family. She has no impressive warrior descendants. Instead, she had normal, loving parents and hailed from a village in the Shuriman desert.

When she was 10 years old, strange things started to happen in the area where Kaisa grew up. Kaisa’s parents became more worried for her safety, urging her to stay at home and avoid any sacrifice seeking strangers. Kaisa did not notice the odd occurrences and was not convinced she was in danger.

One night, she and her friends came across a pen of goats that were due to be sacrificed. She set the goats free, unaware of the grave repercussions that were about to be unleashed. The dark power that was the Void awoke and devoured Kaisa’s village. Kaisa was trapped underground in the darkness, unable to reach her friends and family, but able to hear their cries. After three days in the dark, their voices faded away. Kaisa’s family and friends were gone.

Kaisa became a hardened survivor, eating whatever scraps she could find and using the knife she had been gifted when she was younger to kill Void creatures. However, after her first kill, she noticed that the carapace of the creature attached itself to her arm. She initially tried to remove it, but soon realised that the shell was an effective shield. The carapace became part of her, growing to become a second skin.

It took Kaisa around 10 years to escape from the Void and return to the surface. When she returned, she was not the same. She was not only a fearless, grizzled survivor but also part of the Void itself. She was no longer Kaisa. She was Kai’Sa, Daughter of the Void.

Kai’Sa also has some quick, burst abilities that allow her to dash towards enemies from a distance, making her a little different to typical ranged champions. Her skills can also be upgraded when certain stat thresholds are built during a match. Let’s look into Kai’Sa’s abilities a little more closely.

Kai’Sa has a fascinating and tragic backstory in League of Legends lore. She believes that she is the cause of the destruction of her entire village, along with its inhabitants, including her friends and family (Malhazar, the Void prophet and herald, is the true cause of the disaster).

Kai’Sa spends a huge portion of her life living in the darkness of the Void, only surviving her experience by embracing it and becoming part of it. Kai’Sa’s story of survival, heartbreak and darkness makes her an endearing League of Legends champion.

FAQs

What happened to Kai’Sa?

As mentioned, Kai’Sa was dragged down into the darkness of the Void after she freed a pen of sacrificial goats. She lost all of her loved ones in the process and had to fight to survive for a decade before she escaped.

Is Kai’Sa Kassadin’s daughter?

Kassadin–another Void champion– is thought to be the father of Kai’Sa. He lived in Kai’Sa’s village, and he lost his wife and child when the Void consumed it. Kassadin then goes on a mission of vengeance against the Void.

It has not been officially confirmed, but there are multiple suggestions of Kassadin’s parentage to Kai’Sa. These suggestions come from voice lines and lore references, but also via the alternate universes in League of Legends, such as the K/DA universe, where Kassadin is canonically Kai’Sa’s father.

Is Kai’Sa a villain?

Kai’Sa’s lore does not paint her as a villain. Instead, she is a misunderstood, feared, tragic hero. She wishes to protect others from the Void, but is feared for her Void creature shell. Despite this fear, she does her best to protect others rather than harm them.

How old is Kai’Sa?

There is no specific age given for Kai’Sa, but the timeline of her lore suggests that she is in her early 20s. She is said to have been “in her tenth summer” when she was devoured by the Void, and she spent around 10 years trying to escape, so she is at least 20 years old.

How has Kai’Sa’s lore changed?

There have been a few tweaks to Kai’Sa’s lore since she was released as a champion in 2018. For instance, there have been more and more suggestions that Kassadin is her father since then. Bel’Veth, another Void champion, has also had more of an impact on Kai’Sa’s lore when she was released in 2022. However, her general narrative as a Void survivor has stayed the same.

Does Kai’Sa have connections to other champions?

Kai’Sa does have connections to a few other League of Legends champions. The most prominent connections are her (rumoured) father, Kassadin, and the other Void champions. The Void Champions are as follows:

• Bel’Veth
• Cho’Gath
