TL;DR

  • Fortnite is developed by Epic Games and came out on July 25, 2017.
  • There are over 650 million registered players, and 110 million active players every month.
  • The first collaboration was with Marvel in 2018, where players could become the antagonist Thanos and wield the Infinity Gauntlet for a limited time.
  • Chapter 6, Season 4, is the latest season available in Fortnite, featuring the Power Rangers and the band Gorillaz.

Fortnite collabs are one of the big highlights in Epic Games’ battle-royale game. Since 2018, players have seen plenty of partnerships with other brands, which have added depth to Fortnite in several ways.

From becoming a Jedi in Star Wars to Thanos, the first major antagonist of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there has been something for almost everyone. At the time of writing, the Power Rangers are the latest collab, where players can earn skins to look just like them, with more allegedly coming on September 16.

In the eight years since Fortnite debuted on consoles, smartphones, and PC, there have been countless collabs. With this in mind, we’re ranking some of the most prolific collabs that players mainly remember.

Criteria

As there have been hundreds of collabs released in Fortnite since its 2017 debut, it would be a very long list to rank every one of them. That’s also not to mention the smaller collabs that have only offered skins and nothing more. With this in mind, we’re listing ten of the best collabs that have made the greatest impression on players, and why some rank higher than others.

10 best Fortnite collabs

10. Ariana Grande

Singer Ariana Grande held a virtual concert five times between August 6-8, 2021, where players could buy a skin of her for a limited time. Showcasing huge landscapes and being able to interact with others as she sang her hits, it was proof that Fortnite could be more than a battle-royale game, but one that could spur innovative collabs with creatives like Grande.

9. John Wick

One of the first collabs in Fortnite, John Wick appeared in Fortnite in 2019, where players could earn a skin of the movie-based character, as well as take part in various challenges and bounties. It was a perfect crossover that expanded Fortnite’s gameplay and proved that going into unexplored avenues was to the game’s benefit, instead of a detriment.

8. Travis Scott

Appearing in Season 2, Chapter 2 as a skin set, singer Travis Scott would host an event called Astronomical in 2020. Singing five hits such as SICKO MODE and HIGHEST IN THE ROOM, Scott would teleport around the Sweaty Sands area, so too would players, which was held over two days from April 23-24. This performance was arguably the precursor to Ariana Grande in 2021. While she established that live acts could thrive on Fortnite, Scott began to open the door to the possibility of this happening in the game.

7. LEGO

Some were expecting a season of LEGO-inspired skins, so it was a welcome surprise in 2023 to see LEGO Fortnite Odyssey as its own game. Reminiscent of Minecraft, players could transform into a LEGO figure and explore certain worlds to hunt, go fishing, and more. Vehicles were introduced in 2024, letting players drive around the worlds freely, more substantially adding to the game’s depth. The collab turned out to be a perfect match for both franchises, appealing to new players for Fortnite and vice versa for LEGO, proving that Fortnite could be a platform for other titles, not just its own.

6. Naruto (Anime)

Naruto marked the start of anime appearing in Fortnite in 2021, with others like Dragon Ball and My Hero Academia appearing soon after. This collab would let players collect attacks that are well-known in these anime, such as Goku’s Kamehameha move from Dragon Ball. The collab was a huge success, with some characters and their attacks frequently reappearing from time to time.

5. DC Comics

Comic book superheroes coming to Fortnite all began in 2019 with Batman. Fortnite’s map would change to mimic certain aspects of Gotham City, with other characters like Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn appearing regularly, too. We saw a recent return of DC Comics thanks to the collab of the new Superman film in the summer, with the superhero, as well as Robin, appearing. But in 2019, it was proof that comic book characters could also work in Fortnite, co-existing with other brands.

4. Spider-Man

Although Spider-Man arrived way after the Marvel collab in 2018, the superhero made a huge impression in 2021. Not only were there skins and emotes to collect, but the ability to websling transformed how you could travel across Fortnite’s map. It was very fun to do, and changed the gameplay into something that was very addictive, especially as you could stick to vehicles and more. This collab transformed Fortnite into an unofficial Spider-Man game, but with battle-royale elements.

3. Power Rangers

The current collab at the time of writing, the Power Rangers, has made its mark in Fortnite, thanks to a fantastic introduction video, styled after the 90s series. Players can become one of the six rangers thanks to the battle pass and what’s available in the shop, with more being unveiled on September 16. The collab uniquely brought 90s nostalgia to a whole new level in Fortnite, where players would be in groups, dressed as a team of Power Rangers, which have already become viral on social media. The crossover is proof that nostalgia sells, and when done well, it can attract new and existing players alike.

2. Star Wars

Star Wars has been around in Fortnite for over six years, transforming part of the map into Imperial and Rebel bases, fighting against enemies like Stormtroopers and Darth Vader, and collecting skins based on the franchise. There was even a collab with the then-upcoming movie, Rise of Skywalker, in 2019, revealing a scene before its release. This collab made it one to remember, where it combined fan service and gameplay, transforming Fortnite into an unofficial Star Wars game that many still hold fond memories of.

1. Marvel

With Avengers: Doomsday coming out next year, there’s a chance we may see another collab / Image credit: Epic Games

Arguably one of the biggest and longest collabs, Marvel has been around in Fortnite since 2018. From being able to control Thanos, a big-bad from the franchise in 2018, to Galactus as an end-of-season event in 2020, it’s arguably been unavoidable to interact with the franchise in Fortnite in some way. This collab arguably introduced what a multiverse was to players and fans alike, before it even appeared as a term in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). With the next major movie, Avengers Doomsday, coming in 2026, we wouldn’t be surprised if another collab between Marvel and Fortnite is in the works.

Conclusion

Granted, a ranked list is subjective, so you may have different collabs in your lists. However, the 10 featured above showcased how well a partnership can work within Fortnite, changing some of its gameplay, as well as parts of the map, to make it feel like these collabs were always there.

With rumours that The Simpsons will appear next after Power Rangers, it’s safe to say that collabs are still going strong, all these years later, since Fortnite’s first debut in 2017. Being in a team featuring a Spartan from Halo, Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series, and Goku from Dragon Ball anime is now a natural sight to see. Fortnite made this happen, and it’ll be interesting to see what other collabs could be coming in the future.
