Astralis has been acquired by Fusion Esports Group, a Danish investor group led by the organisation’s co-founder Jakob Lund Kristensen and former Ninjas in Pyjamas COO Jonas Gundersen.

The acquisition follows the release of its 2024 financial statement, in which the organisation revealed a DKK 31.3m (~£3.6m) loss.

Prior to founding Astralis in 2016, Kristensen was the founder and CEO of Copenhagen Wolves, a Danish esports organisation that housed several Counter-Strike players of the organisation, including Peter ‘dupreeh’ Rasmussen and Lukas ‘gla1ve‘ Rossander.

According to a statement, investment in Fusion Esports Group also came from Sander Janca, Founder and CEO of Flatpay, and Thorbjørn Rønje, Co-founder of Bifrost Studios.

Gundersen joins the Astralis ownership after a four-year stint as the COO of Ninjas in Pyjamas, after departing his role of Chief Commercial Officer at fellow Danish organisation North. Gundersen’s interest in acquiring the org was first revealed in a Dust2.dk report published in April.

“Astralis is one of the biggest brands in esports, with a huge impact on an entire generation of Danish gamers,” said Kristensen in a LinkedIn post.

“The potential is still enormous, both commercially and competitively. We’re building a new Astralis with fresh energy and new methods, while keeping our focus on performance.”

The performance of the Astralis Counter-Strike roster played a role in the organisation’s financial troubles after it missed four Majors in a row.

What Next for Astralis?

Astralis is one of 16 teams heading to Serbia to compete in FISSURE Playground 2, the latest Tier 1 event featuring the world’s best teams competing for prize money and all-important Valve Regional Standings (VRS) points.

The event is the first since Emil ‘Magisk’ Reif returned to the starting lineup after Martin ‘stavn‘ Lund stepped back from the roster due to personal circumstances.

Currently ranked 11th in the VRS, a solid performance at the event solidifies the team’s place in the top 32 as attention begins to turn to the StarLadder Budapest Major in November.
