According to data from Mythical Games, the launch of FIFA Rivals has already generated significant interest.

The NFT free-to-play football game achieved over 1m downloads in its first six weeks and recorded 1m matches played in under two weeks. This strong start was further amplified by multiple ‘Game of the Day’ selections from Apple. Mythical Games created FIFA Rivals in collaboration with football governing body FIFA.

Scoring in Millions: Why Players Are Sticking With The Game

The initial player engagement metrics are substantial, extending far beyond the match count. Participants have already generated millions of goals, interceptions, and notable saves.

Several strategic elements contribute to this retention. A partnership with Adidas, active from launch, provides authentic in-game apparel like the Copa, F50, and Predator lines. Seasonal gear releases and integrated adiClub progression offer brand integration without compromising the game’s quick, arcade-style format.

The launch timing also provided a strategic advantage.

Releasing concurrently with the FIFA Club World Cup placed the game within a context of global football interest from the outset. Ongoing platform visibility on the App Store, combined with social media promotions and milestone campaigns, has sustained post-launch awareness.

Furthermore, Mythical Games is applying operational lessons learned from its previous sports title, NFL Rivals. This experience is being used to stabilise the in-game economy, fostering a player trading environment that feels substantive.

Mythical Games CEO John Linden is betting football’s massive global audience can take FIFA Rivals well past NFL Rivals’ 7m players.

Meanwhile, FIFA itself is experimenting with an Avalanche-based highlights platform, hinting that more Web3-powered sports content could plug into Mythical’s ecosystem over time.

The public roadmap for FIFA Rivals details forthcoming features, including an AI sports agent for player development, deeper esports integrations, club collaborations, and a PvE Scenarios mode for replaying famous matches.
