TL;DR

  • Halo, first developed by Bungie, debuted in 2001 for Microsoft’s Xbox console as a launch title.
  • Players take control of Master Chief, a ‘Spartan’ soldier who takes on antagonists like the Covenant, the Flood, and others across the series.
  • The latest game, Halo Infinite, came out in 2021 after a series of delays. While some enjoyed the game, others felt it strayed too far from what made the series so good initially.
  • Halo: Campaign Evolved is a remake of the original Halo game, which also features mechanics from later games in the series. It’s set to release in 2026 for Xbox Series S/X, PC, and PlayStation 5.

Halo is back, but not as you may remember it. Developer Halo Studios, formerly 343 Industries, which took over development of the series in 2007, has announced a remake of the first Halo game from 2001, called Campaign Evolved. Built on Unreal Engine 5, every mission has been rebuilt from scratch, and it also features a series of levels set before the game’s events.

The initial reception has been mixed so far, with fans questioning why the first game needs to be remade when a remaster came out in 2011, called Halo: Anniversary. Nevertheless, one big surprise is that Campaign Evolved is also coming to PlayStation 5, a first for the series. For now, we’re laying out what we know about the upcoming Halo game, as well as some rumours we’ve been hearing about it.

Is a new Halo game coming out?

In October 2025, between breaks of the annually held Halo World Championship, developer Halo Studios announced a remake of 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved. Coming out in 2026 for Xbox Series S/X, PC, and PlayStation 5, this remake will only feature the single-player part of the first game, as its new title, Campaign Evolved, implies.

Some had initially thought that Halo Studios was working on a brand new entry to follow up on 2021’s Halo Infinite. However, it seems that the developer wants to gauge how the Halo franchise resonates with players in 2026, before working on a brand-new Halo entry.

In a blog post on its official page, Halo Studios laid out what Halo: Campaign Evolved features. Powered by Unreal Engine 5 this time, instead of an in-house engine that the series has run on since its inception, it means that development will be far easier for this Halo remake. There are also two-player split-screen co-op on Xbox and PlayStation consoles, as well as four-player co-op online.

Weapons from other Halo games make an appearance in Halo: Campaign Evolved, such as the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, and Needle Rifle. In addition, skulls that could be switched on in the Halo: Master Chief Collection are here, meaning players can enable randomised weapons, altered enemy behaviour, environmental effects, and more that will be announced in time.

There’s also crossplay support, meaning if you complete one mission on your Xbox Series X console, you can carry on your progress on another console or PC. However, the biggest announcement for Halo: Campaign Evolved was the news that it will be coming to the Sony PlayStation 5 as well.

It’s a seismic shift from Halo Studios and Microsoft, but it reinforces the effort to be a multi-platform company now, leaving the idea of console exclusives behind. It does remind some players of when Sega left the hardware business in 2001 due to the failure of its Dreamcast console. This was followed by the release of its most popular IP, Sonic the Hedgehog, on the Nintendo GameCube and other consoles soon after.

The similarities here are obvious, and it does make many wonder if we’ll see Halo appear on the Nintendo Switch 2 in time. Nevertheless, it’s a significant statement from Microsoft, which could prompt other titles to move to the PlayStation 5 in the future.

Although the official announcement is barely a week old, many of the rumours understandably revolve around the multiplayer side of Halo: Campaign Evolved. It’s allegedly being worked on, but as a live-service, similar to Call of Duty: Warzone and the newly-launched Battlefield 6’s battle-royale mode, RedSec.

Many of the maps featured in the original Halo will be remade in the same fashion as the Campaign, complete with vehicles. However, it’s still early days, but we’ll update this article if we hear more as we get closer to the game’s May 2026 release.

Conclusion

Halo: Campaign Evolved clearly heralds a new start for the franchise in many ways. From being powered by Unreal Engine 5 to being available on a non-Xbox console, developer Halo Studios is seemingly putting everything it can into the remake. Although it’s a shame that the multiplayer part is absent for now, meaning we won’t see the next Halo game feature at esports events anytime soon, what we’ve seen of the remade campaign looks promising at least.

Nevertheless, old and new fans of Halo will be excited to see the very first title return in 2026, especially for those who now own a PlayStation 5. As we approach its May 2026 release date, we’ll be sure to update this article with anything we learn or hear about Halo: Campaign Evolved.
