Following nearly two years of construction, Caesars Entertainment and New Jersey attorney and horse racing and sports betting pioneer Dennis Drazin’s Darby Development, the Caesars Sportsbook at Monmouth Park is ready for guests. The from-the-ground-up 16K-square-foot standalone venue is adjacent to the historic racetrack’s clubhouse.

The Monmouth Park Caesars Sportsbook includes sweeping views of the racetrack. Indoors, a wall-to-wall video televisions show live sports from across the nation. There are more than 25 self-service betting kiosks, a staffed counter with oddsmakers, a center bar, and a VIP section.

We are so proud to partner with Caesars and delighted to offer fans this new state-of-the-art sportsbook,” said Drazin, whose Darby Development operates the Monmouth Park Racetrack. “This has been a long time in the making, and it’s satisfying to finally see it come to fruition as we continue the expansion of the Monmouth Park facility as a top entertainment and gaming destination in the state.”

To keep bettors’ bellies full, an on-site Shake Shack is serving a full menu.

Historic Property

Drazin was at the forefront of New Jersey’s crusade to expand single-game sports betting outside of Nevada. The attorney worked closely with Gov. Chris Christi’s (R) administration in taking the fight to the US Supreme Court, which in May 2018 agreed with the state that a federal law violated anti-commandeering interpretations of the US Constitution.

Long before the landmark ruling, Drazin had invested in a sports betting lounge through a partnership with William Hill, the UK betting giant that Caesars would later acquire. As the sports betting lawsuit dragged through federal courts for years, Drazin’s William Hill “sportsbook” was little more than a snack bar with beer and a few small flat-screen TVs.

The track’s new sportsbook is vastly different, rivaling spaces found inside Atlantic City casinos. Monmouth Park was where Gov. Phil Murphy (D) placed the first legal sports bet in New Jersey. It was a $20 bet on the New Jersey Devils winning the 2019 NHL Stanley Cup.

“It’s fitting to open this cutting-edge venue at Monmouth Park, where legal sports betting in New Jersey first launched, and add to its rich history,” added Dan Shapiro, senior vice president and chief development officer at Caesars Digital. “With this investment, we are proud to continue to support horse racing in the Garden State.”

Will Sports Bettors Come?

New Jersey is home to online sports betting, and mobile bets dominate the sportsbook market. Through October, Garden State oddsmakers have taken $9.9 billion in bets. Online books accounted for $9.5 billion of the action.

Monmouth Park and Caesars are betting on their new facility grabbing a bigger share of the retail market than their predecessor space.

The racetrack’s sportsbook reported sports betting revenue of just $1.6 million between January and October. Meanwhile, up the Parkway, the Meadowlands FanDuel book reported retail sports win of more than $19.7 million.
