Electronic Arts (EA) has revealed in a community update that it is rolling out armour changes to Battlefield 6’s REDSEC battle royale.
The main takeaway is that weapon damage modifiers at certain ranges will be tweaked, making long-range gunfights more consistent and certain weapons less dominant at close range.
The post details two significant changes coming to how armour behaves and functions in the Battlefield RedSec battle royale mode.
All weapons, including primary and secondary guns, will have damage drop-off ranges extended by 10 meters against armour. Guns in the game have ‘steps’ that reduce damage as the range increases, and extending each step will allow weapons to become more effective at longer ranges.
“REDSEC fights tend to happen at longer ranges,” EA wrote. “Extending the effective ranges versus armour helps weapons feel more consistent between MP and REDSEC, even though the context is different.”
Automatic Weapons Nerfed
The second change the developers addressed was close-range combat. Automatic weapons will see the first short-range maximum damage step against armour significantly reduced. This change comes as no surprise, as high-rate-of-fire weapons, like SMGs and carbines, have been the meta choice for many players.
EA added: “During playtesting, we found that at very close ranges, where both theoretical and practical hit rates can approach 100%, armour often felt non-existent, especially against high-rate-of-fire weapons.”
The post by EA also highlights what to expect when it comes to future armour changes in the REDSEC battle royale. The developers shared that any updates will favour adjustments against armour to ‘preserve weapon feel’ in the game.
Will This Impact Esports?
These changes will extend beyond the casual player base to the upcoming $1m (~£763,850) esports circuit for REDSEC, affecting both the Open Series and Elite Series tournaments launching later this month.
Fans may also see these changes impact any future community or creator-organised tournaments similar to the CouRage Clash hosted back in November, won by Michael ‘Shroud’ Grzesiek and Timothy ‘iiTzTimmy’ An.
