NetEase has announced Marvel Rivals Season 5.5, bringing new content to the hero shooter on December 12th.
The mid-season update introduces a new hero, Rogue, alongside other changes such as Team-Up rotations, balance adjustments, and more.
Marvel Rivals Season 5.5 has the tendency to shake up both the casual and competitive scenes to some extent, with fans able to find Esports Insider’s analysis below.
New Vanguard Rogue

Rogue is the latest addition to Marvel Rivals’ character roster, joining as the newest Vanguard equipped with a unique kit.
Her reveal trailer showcases a brawler playstyle, utilising melee combos for high bursts of damage. Her signature ability allows her to steal skills from other characters after absorbing them, summon Groot walls, use Doctor Strange’s shield, and transforming into Emma Frost’s diamond form.
Her ultimate is another area-of-effect move, which is capable of reducing the ultimate charge of affected opponents. Additionally, she receives a temporary health boost, capable of reaching over 1,000 points.
Team-Up Changes

The second half of Marvel Rivals Season 5: Love is a Battlefield will see the retirement of older Team-Ups while introducing new combinations for players to experiment with.
Here are all of the Team-Up changes coming in the mid-season update:
Removed
- Mental Projection (Emma Frost – Psylocke): Psylocke summons a clone that mimics her actions, including ability usage. Emma Frost gains 100 additional health bonus.
Adjusted
- Bestial Hunt (Daredevil – The Punisher): Daredevil loses the Team-Up Anchor bonus and will no longer receive 25 additional health.
Added
- Chilling Assault (Luna Snow – Iron Fist/Emma Frost): Emma Frost can summon a wall of ice that blocks incoming damage.
- Sword of Duality (Cloak & Dagger – Hawkeye/Psylocke): Psylocke can use one of two abilities. Photon Dagger heals allies and damages enemies before returning to Psylocke and healing her for every target hit. Dark Darts fires a ring of darts around her that damages enemies and briefly makes Psylocke invisible.
- Explosive Entanglement (Gambit – Magneto/Rogue): Rogue attacks have an area effect when hitting enemies, damaging nearby foes and healing allies.
Balance Changes

NetEase also revealed all of the balance changes that will take effect on December 12th, nerfing some of the most dominant characters while buffing less popular picks.
Vanguards such as Peni Parker and Emma Frost will see their base health increase by 50 extra points. Thor will be able to adjust his trajectory when using Storm Surge freely for increased mobility. Finally, The Thing gains a power boost, increasing the bonus damage buff with Stone Haymaker from 8% to 10%, and Yancy Street Charge’s anti-mobility field will last five seconds instead of three.
Various Duelists are set to receive changes in the next update. Dominant damage heroes like Psylocke and Season 4.5 addition Daredevil will be nerfed, while Scarlet Witch, Human Torch, Phoenix and Punisher will be buffed. Wolverine gains a unique effect where his Last Stand ultimate can now target walls for landing points. Finally, Blade will receive less healing from Bloodline Awakening, but will deal more damage with his melee abilities, Ancestral Sword and Whirlwind Slash.
Strategists will also experience a variety of buffs and nerfs. Gambit, Invisible Woman, and Rocket Raccoon will see increased ultimate charge costs. NetEase also revealed that Loki’s doppelgangers will deal more damage and healing.
Luna Snow gains a new ability, where activating Idol Aura grants her 10% self-healing when restoring ally health. Additionally, she also get a 10% healing and damage boost while Idol Aura is active. However, her Absolute Zero ability will be nerfed in the next update, extending its activation time.
The Season 2 Strategist Ultron will receive some key changes. Imperative: Firewall now requires targeting an ally before use, providing bonus health to nearby players while granting the selected ally increased movement speed and damage. Furthermore, he can now deploy two Imperative: Patch drones at a time, though his ultimate cost has been increased.
How Will This Affect Esports?

With Marvel Rivals Ignite concluded for 2025, the Season 5.5’s impact on esports will be limited. That said, players will need to adapt for open community events such as the seasonal championships.
Rogue shows strong meta potential, especially with her Team-Up including Magneto and Gambit, the top two most popular characters in the Hero Hot List as of December 9th. The extent of her ability absorption could also prove to be a useful tool, especially for providing additional healing by stealing abilities like Loki’s lamps.
The meta will likely see characters like Emma Frost and Psylocke continue to dominate, but recent buffs may allow Strategists like Loki to make a comeback. Additionally, drastic changes to niche characters like Wolverine, Ultron, and Thor could make them more competitively viable.
