In a social media post, Topuria said he was being extorted for money over false allegations of domestic abuse.

“Over the past several weeks, I have made the difficult decision to temporarily step away from defending my title. This was not a decision I took lightly. However when circumstances arise that threaten your personal integrity, your family and your reputation, there comes a point when you must address them directly.

Social Media Post

“In recent months I have been subjected to severe and unacceptable pressure, including threats to disseminate false allegations of domestic abuse unless financial demands were met. These allegations are entirely unfounded. The truth is not a matter of opinion it is a matter of evidence.

“All relevant evidence has been carefully preserved and documented, including audio recordings, written communications, witness statements, and video material. This evidence has been submitted to the appropriate judicial authorities in order to pursue legal action for attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and personal property and multiple threats.

“My initial decision to remain silent was made solely to protect my children, who are the most important part of my life. However, I have come to understand that silence, under the circumstances, does not protect the truth – it allows false narratives to take hold.

Extortion

“Many individuals have faced similar situations, and time and again the legal system has ultimately clarified the facts. Today, I am stepping forward not only for my family and myself, but also to demonstrate that no one should be forced to yield to intimidation, manipulation or fear. Those who know me can attest that I have never engaged in violence of any kind, and that my life and career have always been guided by discipline, respect, and integrity.

“I have full confidence in the judicial process and will allow the legal system to determine the facts based on evidence.

“Out of respect for my children and the ongoing legal proceedings, I will not be making any further public statements. I respectfully ask that speculation be avoided, and that my family’s privacy be honored during this sensitive time.

“The truth does not require volume – it requires facts.”

Interim Lightweight Title Bout

Meanwhile, the UFC is not sitting around waiting, having scheduled a lightweight interim title bout between No. 5-ranked Paddy Pimblett and No. 4-ranked Justin Gaethje in Las Vegas at T-Mobile Arena Jan. 24 at 9 p.m. EST.

Current bettings odds for that one: At BetMGM today Pimblett is the favourite at -208, Gaethje is +170. DraftKings has it Pimblett -205, Gaethje +170. FanDuel has it Pimblett -215, Gaethje +164.

UFC Superstar

In terms of UFC fighters with the biggest brand power, it doesn’t get any bigger than Topuria. Alright, maybe Conor McGregor, but he is now more known for his massive social media following and business empire, and his bravado. McGregor hasn’t done anything in the Octagon since June 2021, when he broke his leg against Dustin Poirier. Maybe light heavyweight champ Alex Pereira, with his knockout power, multiple division titles and rapid rise to stardom. He’s one of the most feared and marketable active champions.

Topuria is a megastar, undefeated and charismatic, with a massive social media following and strong sponsorship appeal, moving up divisions, knocking out UFC legends along the way. It’s going to make for one helluva comeback fight when he does return.

UFC 326 Update

Meanwhile, four big names have been added in the middleweight category to UFC 326 on March 7, also being held in Las Vegas. Former title challenger Paulo Costa, ranked No. 13, will square up against Brunno Ferreira, while No. 7-ranked Caio Borralho will take on No. 8-ranked Reinier de Ridder.
