A motorist who was cut off by another car on a Maryland highway used the license plate number of that other auto to play the lottery later that same day. The result is the Anne Arundel County, Md. man won $500K late last month.

The story begins when he was on the highway heading back to his residence after an out-of-town journey. He narrowly avoided having his car struck.

The unnamed driver memorized the digits on the license plate from the other car.

Stopped at Liquor Store

Rather than stay angry at the rude motorist, later that day he decided to go to a liquor store, identified as Doc’s F&B Liquors in Glen Burnie, Md.

While there, he purchased 10 “Pick 5” game tickets, according to a Maryland Lottery statement released on Friday.

The man “played the number straight for $1, pocketing 10 identical but separate tickets,” the lottery statement added.

I figure if you’re going to play, you should play big,” he later explained to lottery officials.

Rather than immediately check his numbers, he went back to his residence and went to sleep. After all, it was a trying day.

The next morning, he eventually checked to see if he had the winning numbers.

“I scanned the tickets using the Lottery app on the phone,” the man recalled.

He immediately realized he had won $500K. He broke into a smile. The lucky winner quickly alerted his mother about the payout. She also was happy with the news, according to lottery officials.

Will Pay Bills, Invest

What will he do with the newly-found fortune?

He told lottery employees he will divide the jackpot between paying off current bills and saving for the future by making investments.

He also told lottery officials he had occasionally played “Pick 5” before the day he won the $500K.

Because the liquor store sold the winning tickets, Doc’s F&B Liquors will receive a $5K bonus from the Maryland Lottery. The store sells beer, wine, and spirits. It’s located in Burwood Village Center.

No word if the lottery player alerted Maryland State Police about being cut off by the other driver. After all, he could have given state troopers the vehicle’s license plate number. But he learned a lesson from the experience.

When driving on the highway, you’re supposed to obey the rules of the road and be courteous toward other drivers. However, that doesn’t always happen,” the Maryland Lottery statement said.
