UFC bantamweight Douglas Silva de Andrade will be on the sidelines until later this year.

Combat Sports Anti-Doping, the UFC’s drug-testing agency, announced that Silva de Andrade has accepted a six-month suspension after testing positive for furosemide, a diuretic, which is prohibited for fighters on the UFC roster. The test occurred on Feb. 14, and the result forced Silva de Andrade out of his scheduled UFC bout two weeks later against John Castaneda.

After getting the result, Silva de Andrade provided CSAD with a supplement he was taking ahead of his fight that did not list furosemide on the label as an active ingredient. The supplement was tested at Sport Medicine and Research Testing Laboratory in Salt Lake City, and furosemide was detected “at a level consistent with the presence in Silva da Andrade’s sample.

CSAD also sent a separate sealed container of the supplement to the same lab, which also came back with furosemide detected. Despite the supplement being tainted, Silva de Andrade was still penalized.

“While there was no evidence of the intentional use of furosemide by Silva da Andrade, he did not follow the UFC [Anti-Doping Policy] directions to UFC athletes to ONLY consume approved 3rd party tested supplements,” per CSAD officials.

Silva de Andrade’s suspension began on Feb. 28, and will be eligible to compete on Aug. 28. The 39-year-old is 7-6 in the UFC, losing a decision to Miles Johns in his most recent bout this past June.
