Devin Haney got back in the win column, but it almost felt like a loss.
On Friday night, Haney returned to action for the first time since his loss-turned-no-contest against Ryan Garcia in 2024, taking on former unified light welterweight champion Jose Ramirez in the second of the three-fight main card Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero fight card dubbed “Fatal Fury: City of Wolves.” The fight was largely viewed as a setup bout for Haney’s eventual rematch with Garcia, but fans won’t be clamoring for that anytime soon after Haney won a unanimous decision in a historically bad fight.
Haney looked tentative from the opening bell, refusing to engage with Ramirez, who was similarly non-violent. That tone continued round after round as the two barely swung at each other, nearly setting the record for fewest punches thrown over a 12-round fight at any weight class, with Haney only attempted 224 punches in the entire fight. In the end, Haney did slightly more nothing than Ramirez did in each round and took scorecards of 119-109, 119-109, and 118-110, but he certainly didn’t make any new fans and raised so little interest in a Garcia rematch that the broadcast declined to interview him after the win.
