Jon Jones is all smiles, no matter what anyone has to say about his career choices.
The current UFC heavyweight champion and light heavyweight great took some time out of an Instagram Live chat to address his haters, specifically those calling him a “duck” for not wanting to fight interim champion Tom Aspinall. Jones won a vacant title in March 2023 following the departure of lineal champion Francis Ngannou from the UFC, and has defended it once, defeating a retiring Stipe Miocic this past November.
Aspinall holds an 8-1 record in the UFC’s heavyweight division and has also defended his title, beating Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 to avenge his lone loss inside the octagon.
“I’ve got people in the chat calling me a ‘duck,’” Jones said. “Meanwhile, I’m living my absolute best life.
“I don’t know if it’s considered ducking when you’re living good. I don’t think it works like that.”
For Aspinall’s part, he has stated multiple times that while he would love the opportunity to fight Jones, one of the greatest fighters in MMA history, he is also ready to move on if the UFC wants to match him up with someone else. Aspinall recently told the High Performance Podcast that he’s just about done waiting around for Jones to come around.
“When you put him in there with, and I’m not trying to blow my own trumpet, but I’m literally the most dangerous guy in the UFC if you look at the stats,” Aspinall said. “When you put him in with a guy of my size who has them credentials at this stage in his career, I think Jon’s a smart guy and realizes that, so he wants to be compensated financially for it. …
“I’m well bored of [the Jones conversation]. I’ve had enough. We either need to fight, or I need to move on to something else.”
