UFC fans are happy to see Kamaru Usman back in the octagon after a long layoff, but they don’t believe his win over Joaquin Buckley should put him back in a title fight.

Usman returned for the first time in nearly two years and earned a lopsided decision against Buckley in the main event of UFC Atlanta this past Saturday. The victory snapped a three-fight skid, and served as Usman’s first UFC win since earning a decision against Colby Covington at UFC 268 in November 2021.

Throughout fight week, Usman was quite confident that a victory would not only put him back in the title conversation, but would earn him a title fight against the winner of the future matchup between new champ Jack Della Maddalena and Islam Makhachev. A lot has happened since Usman was healing up, with a slew of new contenders and competitors rising up the divisional ranks such as Sean Brady, Shavkat Rakhmonov, Ian Machado Garry, and others. Additionally, most fans believed that win, lose, or draw against Buckley, a grudge match against Belal Muhammad would be the fight to make.

Usman no-sold Muhammad during media day, then doubled-down on it after his win, remaining steadfast that a title fight should be next. The sentiment seemed to leave fans scratching their heads, as can be seen from the MMA Fighting community.

These fighters are getting ridiculous.

On one hand, fine. Throw your name in there for a title shot and see if it sticks. Why not? On the other, you gotta be kidding me. First win in nearly four years and he is acting too good to fight Belal. Who was just the champ a few months ago and he has a history with.

We like to shit on Dana and it is typically justified, but the reason the UFC is shittier now is because of the fighters. It won’t be terribly long until this shit is like boxing.

Kamaru getting winner of Islam/Jack and Juliana getting winner of Kayla/Amanda should be on the same mythical card that exists only in their delusional heads. Sorry 1 win in 4 years doesn’t get you jumping contenders folks.

If Kamaru is gonna call himself the boogeyman, he should fight Shavkat imo. I get the Belal beef but I see that being like a Usman vs Covington 2, cancelled wrestling and the striking is there but nothing to awe at. I think Shavkat should get a win if he wants to fight for the belt, so either Usman or Shavkat winning would prove who the #1 Contender.

Is Shavkat still on the shelf? He’s next if he’s ready. The division looks pretty good right now. Outside of the JDM/Makachev fight you have Usman(replacing Buckley), Brady, Shavkat, Garry, Morales and Belal. A lot of matchups to make for title contenders at least.

I love your reply. I’m a big fan of Usman, but I’m a bit cringed at him demanding a title shot.

Of course he won’t get it.

There’s only one attribute that he would need to get the next shot, and that’s being a big PPV draw (which he isn’t)

Dana and the UFC would always give preferential treatment to a PPV draw, but as it is, it’s unfathomable that he gets in line ahead of Shavkat and Brady.

I trust Dana always shows respect to former longstanding champions and he will do Usman the favour of having to win only one more fight to get a title shot.

Usman should go fight Shavkat. That’s the fight to make.
