Sony has published its consolidated financial reports, where it shared that PlayStation 5 (PS5) console sales have reached 80.2m as of June 30th, 2025.

The reports detail results for the first quarter (April to June) of the 2025 to 2026 fiscal year, which saw 2.5m units shipped during the three-month period.

In its game and network services segment, covering PlayStation and PlayStation Network, it saw sales reach ÂĄ936.5bn (~$6.46bn/ÂŁ5.06bn), an increase of 8% or ÂĄ71.6bn (~$494m/ÂŁ387m) compared to Q1 of the 2024 fiscal year.

Sony attributes this to the increase in sales of non-first-party software titles and add-on content being played on PlayStation systems.

Financial figures also highlight an increase in monthly active users on the PlayStation Network in June, noting an increase to 123m people, up 7m compared to last year. Furthermore, games purchased across both PS5 and PlayStation 4 systems reached 65.9m, an increase of 12.3m.

As a result, it noted a rise in operation income to ÂĄ148bn (~$1.02bn/ÂŁ799m), an increase of 127% compared to last year. Again, this was in response to the surge in sales for both software and hardware, in addition to the increase in active users.

2.5m PS5 units sold may be underwhelming compared to the Nintendo Switch 2 sales, though it still shows interest in the platform five years after it launched.

Sony and PlayStations’ Esports Involvement

This year, Sony has made efforts to expand its presence in the esports scene through product launches, partnerships, and more.

This quarter saw Sony become more active within the FGC scene. It recently entered a strategic deal with Bandai Namco, which is responsible for some of the most competitive games, such as Tekken 8.

It has also released various promotions for its FGC title, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, which held a playable demo at Evo 2025. This coincides with the reveal of the company’s first fight stick, the FlexStrike, which caters towards the FGC and its competitive ecosystem.

Beforehand, it secured a multi-year long partnership with the VALORANT Champions Tour EMEA competition through its gaming gear brand, INZONE. The brand has supported other competitive titles throughout the years, such as its deal with Cloud9 in the Call of Duty League.
