The formation of a Virginia Gaming Commission has been endorsed by the No Fairfax Casino Coalition (NFCC).
The organisation acknowledges the significance of strict oversight and regulation of gaming operations throughout Virginia, even though it is still adamantly opposed to the construction of a casino in Fairfax County.
NFCC Chair Lynne Mulston emphasised that until the commission is fully operational, new gaming establishments and online platforms must be prohibited to ensure a fair and regulated gaming environment throughout the state.
The NFCC contends that by offering uniform and unified oversight, the establishment of a centralised gaming commission will benefit the people of Virginia.
Over the past decade, Virginia has witnessed a significant rise in the number of legal gaming options, including sports betting, casinos, lotteries, charitable gaming, and the emergence of online platforms.
According to the coalition, a specialised agency is needed to effectively manage the expanding gaming industry and align it with Virginia’s social and economic priorities, given the state’s disjointed regulatory environment.
A Unified Regulatory Approach for Virginia’s Gaming Industry
Several state agencies currently oversee gaming in Virginia, and certain gaming industries are not adequately regulated.
The NFCC emphasises that by centralising enforcement and expertise, a gaming commission would increase regulatory efficiency and consolidate authority.
A clearer set of regulations, improved transparency for all parties involved, and stronger player protections would result from this.
To strengthen industry safeguards, the new commission would also be responsible for providing resources and support services for problem gamblers.
The coalition backs legislation that keeps Virginia law’s referendum requirements for voter approval in place and limits new casino proposals to local government authorities.
The NFCC urged lawmakers to give the issue top priority during the 2026 legislative session and commended Senator Aird and Delegate Krizek for their leadership in putting forth the commission’s creation.
The coalition represents over 200,000 residents of Fairfax, and its support highlights the need for efficient gaming regulation in Fairfax County without expansion.
In the direction of a controlled, responsible, and open gaming future for the state, the Virginia Gaming Commission is regarded as a crucial first step.
