With a particular emphasis on advertising regulation, prevention, and addiction treatment, the Danish government is initiating talks to address the country’s increasing gambling harm issue.
Citing research that indicates approximately 500,000 Danes suffer from some form of gambling problem, Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund has called political parties to the table.
These problems affect people of all ages, affecting both adults who lose more than they intended to and children who gamble during school hours.
Stoklund emphasised the urgency for action: “Far too many Danes have problems with gambling, and some are affected by outright gambling addiction. This can have very serious consequences for those who gamble, but also for their families and relationships.”
He added that political consensus is needed on long-term solutions, echoing widespread demand from both public stakeholders and the gaming industry.
Focus on Marketing, Prevention and Treatment
The government has identified three main topics for the talks: better prevention techniques, more support for individuals battling addiction, and more stringent regulation of gambling marketing.
Stoklund drew attention to the increasingly aggressive nature of gambling advertising, particularly during major athletic events.
A ‘whistle-to-whistle’ ban, which forbids gambling advertisements during commercial breaks and halftime of TV sports broadcasts, is one of the proposed measures.
Prevention and improved access to treatment will also be central to reforms.
Stoklund stated: “Prevention is absolutely central to ensuring that fewer Danes develop gambling problems. I am also concerned that we ensure effective and targeted tools for those who already have problems with gambling. Therefore, I propose that we strengthen the treatment of gambling addiction with more funds and better conditions for treatment centres.”
These discussions take place as the gaming industry in Denmark continues to change and as public and political pressure to reduce the negative effects of gambling grows.
The results might provide more resources for people and families impacted by gambling issues, as well as stricter industry regulations.
