TL;DR

  • EXP Lane heroes are usually sturdy or have good sustain abilities to remain in lane for longer.
  • The lane isn’t in a vacuum; EXP laners are expected to help the jungler and mid lanes.
  • The early game is better spent gaining experience more quickly and helping teammates.
  • You don’t need to hug and push the top lane; an EXP laner is invaluable in teamfights.
  • Pick a tanky hero if the team lacks a proper tank, a fighter if you want to go for the kills.

The top lane or EXP lane in MLBB plays differently from other MOBAs. It’s a much faster game, so the EXP lane moves fast with additional experience points. The goal is to level up fast and move around the map, aiding teammates. An effective EXP lane hero can help you climb MLBB ranks quicker and easier.

Players in the EXP lane gain 25% more experience from minions for the first five minutes in the game. They can reach level 4 faster, get their ultimate, and get ready to aid their jungler with the first turtle. There are particular techniques to take down your opponent or deny them experience as well. So, all is not straightforward in the top lane.

Dealing damage, tanking for the team, and helping out struggling teammates is the MLBB EXP lane’s job. Learn how to play EXP lane in MLBB and reach MLBB diamond (Mythic) rank in no time.

Early Game

Picking the right MLBB character for the EXP lane is critical. While you can get away with some odd choices in regular queue, in ranked games, your pick can make or break the match. Pick a hero that is not buff-dependent, so you are not fighting your own jungler for buffs. Sustainability is another significant factor, especially against heroes with heal or life steal.

Each role in MLBB is essential, but in its own lane. Similarly, don’t pick pure assassins or mages; you should have 1v1 potential in the lane. I also recommend heroes that can clear the minion wave fast. Personally, I’m in love with Minsitthar and Gloo in EXP lane, both are excellent picks with sound wave clear and sustain. A hero that can survive enemy ganks is also a must; the enemy jungler will visit your lane often, so you’d better have a get-out-of-jail card.

The early game is all about farming. However, be smart about it, freeze the lane near your tower so the enemy EXP laner has to overextend. Lane freezing will help your jungler gank effectively as well, potentially getting you a kill. Once the enemy EXP laner retreats, clear the wave and get the tower gold. You get 25% extra experience for the first 5 minutes; make good use of it and reach level 4.

Deal With a Tower Hugger

If you dominate your opponent, they are more likely to hug their tower and play defensively. This puts you at a disadvantage, giving the enemy plenty of opportunities to gank. To counter a tower hugger, you can try “lane cutting”.

Cut their lane between the first and second towers and engage enemy minions there. The move gives you gold and exp and also pushes your minion wave forward. You should be very cautious and have good map awareness to pull off this risky move.

Mid Game

Get your ultimate and be ready for the turtle to spawn. Your jungler and the roamer will also be there to help you take down the turtle. The turtle buff is great for ganking, so depending on the minion position in your lane, you can gank mid as well. Head back to your lane to continue farming.

Keep in mind that the jungler may not help gank your lane, so it’s up to you to win the 1v1 contest. Playing smart is the key here, poke and prod, but only go for the kill when you are sure you can secure it. Even if you are losing the lane, you can still tower hug and farm. Purchase items that can further increase sustainability, and you’ll have a good chance of a comeback.

You have to cover half of the map yourself; jungler and roam can sometimes help you, but it’s up to you to be alert. If the mid lane is struggling, you can help them secure a kill. If you see your jungler having trouble with ganks, you can babysit them for a bit, too. However, the EXP lane should be your top priority. Push when you see an opening to create pressure on the opponents.

End Game

The endgame is where things get tricky, especially in later MLBB ranks. Depending on the role, you’ll either be the main tank or the primary melee damage dealer. Either way, you’ll be expected to start fights. Most EXP lane meta heroes have at least one ability that can initiate fights; use that wisely and in the company of your damage-dealing teammates.

You are also expected to face-check bushes in the absence of a tank, so make sure your build has at least two items that can increase your sustain. Taking the Lord is essential; however, a good jungler or gold laner can clear it solo in the late game. You should at least keep them company to discourage Lord-stealing.

If all else fails, you can always try to split push, especially if the enemy team is kill-hungry and distracted. Pushing lanes is critical in the late game, so make sure you clear all three lanes before focusing on one.

Conclusion

Playing the EXP lane in MLBB can be a lonely affair, which is perfect if you are playing solo queue. You don’t need to coordinate much with the team; you just need good map awareness and gamesense to win skirmishes. Play your cards right, and you’ll climb MLBB ranks faster and easier.
