Police allege that Keryan Rashad Jones, of San Antonio, opened fire at the tribal casino near the US-Mexico border around 11:45 pm local time on the night of Sept. 27. The shooting occurred shortly after the casino owned and operated by the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas raffled off a Mercedes-Benz E350 to a lucky winner.

Jones was arrested the morning after the shooting at his apartment complex in San Antonio, roughly 125 miles northeast of the casino.

Court documents show Jones is facing numerous charges, including two counts of capital murder, charges that can carry the death penalty if convicted. Jones is also charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and exhibiting a deadly weapon while committing an assault.

Two Dead

Two people died in the Sept. 27 shooting at the Lucky Eagle casino. The victims were Alicia Sanchez, 32, a mother of five, and Marcus Antley, 66, a retired customs and border agent.

The police affidavit detailed the shooting, which occurred just outside the casino’s main entrance. Kickapoo police said they responded to the casino at 11:50 pm and found seven people with gunshot wounds near the crosswalk and pathway “outside the A-11 entrance.”

Law enforcement said they were able to track Jones after he fled in a black Nissan Frontier. Camera systems along Texas’ roadways pinpointed Jones returning to San Antonio. License plate surveillance was able to identify Jones as the likely culprit.

Aside from how police tracked Jones down, details on what led up to the shooting remain scant. Police have not detailed a motive or whether Jones knew his victims.

Jones has remained in custody since his arrest on a $5.1 million bond. He’s due in court on Jan. 7 for an arrangement.

Neighbors of Jones said he kept to himself but was “angry-looking.”

“I don’t specifically know him, but I’ve seen him walk around. He’s a very angry-looking guy,” Isabella Markert, a neighbor, told KSAT.

Casino Reopened

The Lucky Eagle Casino, which offers more than 3,300 slot-like electronic bingo machines, reopened less than a week after the deadly shooting. The casino resort additionally includes a 249-room hotel, an RV lot, a live music venue, five restaurants, and three bars.

The tribe says it has since strengthened its security measures, with the primary entrance where the shooting occurred now fitted with a concrete barrier wall.

“As we reopen, we are committed to supporting our team, our guests, and are grateful for the strength of our community,” the casino said at the time.
